Gone are the days of suffering through the “growing out” stage of a hairstyle in transition or wearing a scarf to cover a haircut0gone-wrong. A new breakthrough in hair design is making it possible to walk into a hair salon with short, fine, or damaged hair and walk out a few hours later with masses of long, flowing locks.
The technique used to achieve this apparent miracle is called “hair extension.” The results can be like magic for people who have tried to wish back cherished length after a bad haircut, had their hair break from chemical processing, lost hair as a result of medical treatments or surgery – or simply want to bypass the awkward waiting stages when changing from a short to a long “look.”
Transforming hair through extensions requires natural hair from two-and-one-half to three inches long. “By combining percentages of differently colored fibers, we can match a person’s natural shade, weave in subtle highlights, or add a much lighter or darker shade for contrast,” says Dawn Harrison of Invisible Hair™, one of a handful of hair stylists in San Diego currently using the technique, and the only educator in the United States for Dome Cosmetics Limited, the creator of hair extensions. Once the extensions are in place, the new head of hair can be cut and styled to create any effect – from sophisticated and businesslike to wild and wacky. The extensions can be left stick straight, curled with hot rollers, or permed using a special technique. While some people are after length, others want volume and use extensions to fill out their hair.
Understanding the limitations of extensions is important. “Extensions do not have the elasticity of natural hair, so when you brush out an extension it doesn’t bounce back,” says Dawn. “It has to be treated a little differently.”
Since this article appeared, Dawn Harrison has secured a patent on a unique application process and method of attachments for Invisible Hair™ Extensions. Learn more.
Dawn says that the jury on hair extensions is deadlocked. “Many people are ecstatic with their new looks, others find it a change of pace, and those who are disappointed are typically individuals who thought that once their extensions were in place, they wouldn’t have to do anything to their hair again. Just like real hair, extensions require styling to look their best.”
